
Cumberland County was created on January 27, 1750, and is named after Cumberland, England. The Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest churches in central Pennsylvania, was established in 1738 near present day Shippensburg, PA. Cumberland County is home to Shippensburg University and Messiah College. Carlisle is the oldest city in Cumberland County, and is home to the U.S. Army War College, a well established Military History Institute.

The campaign for the Gettysburg battle in the Civil war was launched on its rolling hills. Mechanicsburg also offers attractions, including Jubilee Day, the largest and longest running one-day street fair on the East Coast.
